Epping war memorial is a limestone Latin cross. It is located on the Green near Palmers Hill and Epping High Street. It is Grade II listed and within Epping Conservation Area.
In 2011, War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £477 towards repair work to the memorial. Some of the stonework around the names had deteriorated and required replacement. The damaged stone was cut out by hand and replaced with matching Clipsham stone to fit the original profile. It was fixed with stainless steel dowels and stone resin. Although the new stone stands out visually, it will quickly weather to match the rest of the stone.
In 2017 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £2,180 towards works to clean the memorial’s plaques using natural bristle brushes and a mild soap detergent. Following the cleaning of the tablet, where required the incised lettering was deepened and sharpened to match the original design. The lettering was then repainted to improve the legibility.
The memorial was paid for by public subscription and unveiled by Brigadier General J T Wigan on 8th May 1921. It was designed by Edward P Warren (1856-1937), articled to G F Bodley. Laurence Turner, who built the memorial, was a noted craftsman.
The inscription reads:
In Memory Of/ Those Brave Men Of Epping/ Who Laid Down Their Lives/ For Our Country/ In The Great War/ Of 1914-1919/ & 1939-1945
